Meet the Committees of ColtsMUN XIV!
From the Russian Revolution to the Marvel Universe, from global healthcare to the NFL, ColtsMUN XIV is bringing together history, politics, science, and even sports for an exciting day of debate and diplomacy!
This year, we're welcoming delegates to 10 unique committees, each offering its own challenges, debates, and opportunities to make an impact. Whether you're interested in international relations, passionate about environmental issues, or just want to settle the debate over the NFL's Tush Push, there's a committee for you.
Here's a look at what you can expect at ColtsMUN XIV!
The Troubles
Travel back to Northern Ireland during the Troubles, a decades-long conflict that divided Catholic and Protestant communities from the late 1960s to 1998. As political tensions escalate, armed militias emerge, and the British Army becomes involved, delegates must confront deeply rooted disagreements over Northern Ireland's future. Through negotiation, compromise, and diplomacy, you'll work to address competing political interests and navigate the difficult path toward lasting peace.
Russian Revolution
It's April 1918, and Russia is on the brink of civil war. Following the Bolshevik seizure of power and the collapse of previous governments, political factions are competing to determine the country's future. In this fast-paced crisis committee, delegates will portray prominent revolutionary leaders and political figures, each with their own ambitions, alliances, and interests. As unexpected developments unfold, you'll negotiate with rival factions, build alliances, and make critical decisions that could change the course of the Russian Civil War. With the country hanging in the balance, every decision counts.
World Bank: Progress through Partnership
How can we build a more prosperous world without sacrificing the planet? In the World Bank, delegates will tackle two major challenges: rural development and the transition to green economies. You'll explore how countries can address poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare, education, and infrastructure while also investing in renewable energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. With different countries facing different economic and environmental challenges, delegates must balance national priorities with international cooperation to create practical solutions for sustainable development.
UNSC: Sokovia Accords
The Marvel Universe is coming to ColtsMUN XIV. As governments, superheroes, mutants, and underground organizations clash over the Sokovia Accords, the world faces a critical question: Who should control extraordinary power? Representing world leaders in the United Nations Security Council, delegates will debate superhero oversight, national security, civil liberties, and the growing influence of superhuman organizations. With advanced technology and extraterrestrial threats complicating international relations, you'll negotiate agreements that could determine the future of superheroes and global security. Will you support government regulation, defend superhero independence, or forge an entirely new path?
New Jersey State Senate: Energy and the Environment
Big decisions aren't just made on the international stage. They're made right here in New Jersey, too! Step into the shoes of a New Jersey state senator and debate the future of energy in the Garden State. Delegates will examine two major issues: the future of nuclear energy and the regulation of oil and fossil fuels. From considering the potential of small modular reactors to addressing the economic and environmental consequences of fossil-fuel dependence, senators must weigh energy security, public health, affordability, and sustainability. Your challenge is to develop policies that balance New Jersey's energy needs with its transition toward a cleaner future.
HLPF: Pharmaceutical Price Shifts
What happens when lifesaving medicine is too expensive for the people who need it most? In the High-Level Political Forum, delegates will explore how pharmaceutical pricing, patent protections, and corporate monopolies affect access to essential medicines around the world. You'll debate how governments and international organizations can encourage medical research and innovation while preventing anticompetitive practices and making treatments more affordable. With humanitarian crises placing additional pressure on healthcare systems, delegates must develop cooperative solutions that protect vulnerable populations and advance global public health.
UNHRC: Journalist Protections
In a world where information travels faster than ever, protecting the people who report it is essential. In the United Nations Human Rights Council, delegates will confront the challenges facing journalists and independent media around the world. From threats against reporters in conflict zones to censorship, government restrictions, and the protection of press freedom, you'll examine the responsibilities of governments and international organizations in safeguarding journalism. Delegates will work to develop solutions that protect journalists, uphold freedom of expression, and ensure that the public continues to have access to reliable information.
NFL Owners: Rules and Safety
Calling all football fans! Take your seat among the NFL's team owners and tackle two of the league's most debated issues: the Tush Push and artificial turf versus natural grass. Should the league restrict the controversial Tush Push over concerns about player safety, or should teams retain the freedom to use it? And should stadiums prioritize natural grass despite its maintenance costs and logistical challenges? Representing NFL franchises, delegates will debate proposed rule changes, stadium investments, injury prevention, and competitive fairness. With player safety, team finances, and the future of football on the line, it's time to make your case.
European Union: Migration and Social Cohesion
As Europe becomes increasingly diverse, how can countries welcome newcomers while maintaining strong and inclusive communities? In the European Union, delegates will explore immigration and social integration, examining how governments can help migrants access education, employment, language programs, and other essential services. At the same time, you'll consider how immigrants can preserve their cultural identities, traditions, and languages while participating in their new communities. With EU member states facing different economic, political, and social circumstances, delegates must develop cooperative policies that promote opportunity, cultural understanding, and social cohesion.
UNESCO: Governance of Artificial Intelligence in Global Society
Artificial intelligence is changing the way we learn, work, and interact with the world. But who should set the rules? In UNESCO, delegates will examine two major issues surrounding the rapid growth of AI: its economic and commercial influence and its implications for national data privacy. From the use of AI in businesses and workplaces to the collection and protection of personal information, you'll consider how governments can encourage technological innovation while addressing its potential risks. Delegates will collaborate on international guidelines that balance economic opportunity, individual rights, and responsible AI development.
